![]() ![]() The product lineup went on to consist of the base model Kobo Touch, the smaller Kobo Mini, and the Kobo Glo, which has an illuminated screen. The first Kobo eReader was introduced in 2010. Kobo produces several eReaders with ePaper screens. The company reported that romance and mystery novels continued to be bestsellers during the pandemic, and that there was a rise in books for kids and young adults. ĭuring the COVID pandemic, Kobo worked with governments, publishers, and retail partners to provide more than 20 million free books through the “Stay Home and Read” program. On, Waterstones announced it had sold its eBook business to Rakuten Kobo Inc., and as of 14 June 2016, users were required to access their eBooks via Kobo's eBook site. Rakuten acquired the company from these owners in January 2012. As of March 2010, Indigo Books & Music owned 58% of Kobo Inc. Indigo remained the majority owner, with investors including Borders Group, Cheung Kong Holdings, and REDgroup Retail taking minority stakes. In December 2009, Indigo renamed the service Kobo and spun it off into an independent company. Kobo originated as Shortcovers, a cloud eReading service launched by the Canadian bookstore chain Indigo Books and Music in February 2009. It is headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, and is a subsidiary of the Japanese ecommerce conglomerate Rakuten. I don't know if Kobo is any better in that respect, as I've never used one, but it's hard to imagine it's worse.Rakuten Kobo Inc., or simply Kobo, is a Canadian company that sells ebooks, audiobooks, ereaders and tablet computers. With physical books, you can at least jump through some hoops and order from different (foreign) Amazon sites (or other book stores, of course!), but you can't do that with a kindle! Your kindle is one country only. ![]() One issue I've had with the Kindle is that Amazon's handling of foreign markets and languages is awful, your Kindle is locked to a particular country, and you can only get books from that country's Amazon store.Įach country's Amazon store typically only has a good selection of books in that country's common languages (there's sometimes a selection of "foreign language books," but this is typically extremely limited). I prefer reading with brightness to 0 using a light anyways, so for me it's not an issue, but I can say fairly the Kobo did have nice low-level lighting options.īut for overall experience, I definitely preferred the Kindle. However, the Kobo did have at least 1 clear advantage - I liked the lighting a bit better, the 'night mode' lighting was very nice on the eyes. It's only $20 and I'm not upset about this (want to re-iterate it's not a reason for preferring the Kindle device itself!), but I know with Amazon a return is never an issue as long as you are reasonable. When I returned the Kobo, I first tried to return the book I tested, and was told 'too bad'. I contacted tech support and wanted to disable the touch text select but they did not have a solution unfortunately.ĭespite being 'limited' to just Amazon books by Kindle (I think this is the case?), pretty much everything I'd want to read is there, and I purchased the same book on Amazon for $15 that costed $20 on Kobo. On the Kobo it's a very big, real issue that makes reading annoying at times. The Oasis buttons and grip make this a non-issue. Even when I disabled this feature so it was only page turn by swipe, the Kobo would still select text when my finger would touch the screen. With the Kobo my hand would frequently inadvertently touch the screen causing the page to turn. I like having the page turn buttons of the Kindle Oasis. Overall the device just feels more responsive to touch and has a nice intuitive UI. ![]() The Kindle operating system is much faster and crisper. It's lighter, and the grip of the Oasis is awesome with the bulge at one side to hold onto. I bought both a Kobo Aura One and Kindle Oasis to try out side by side with the intention to return one and keep one.Īfter a few days the choice was clear - Kindle, easily, is better.įeeling in hand of the Kindle is much nicer. ![]()
